  • New in the shop: Sweet Luka Mo

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetWe are so excited to be carrying local Philly baby/toddler line, Sweet Luka Mo! AND, Art Star will be the only brick n’ mortar shop in the area where you can find the popular eco-friendly brand!

“Sweet Luka Mo’s stance on baby clothing is simple: we should wish it came in our size.

Based in Philadelphia, PA, we make modern, sustainable baby and kids’ clothes built to withstand fun times, drawing our inspiration from city life, street art, and the adventures of urban kids.

It all started with our infant son Luka and a few too many unsatisfying searches for cool clothing to put him in. It seemed finding comfortable, stylish, contemporary, gender-neutral, sustainable, and ethically-made clothing was near impossible, so we combined our design and clothing construction know-how and got down to business. What started as a small, home-based/homemade clothing line has since expanded beyond our dreams, and today we’re proud to have a line that is almost entirely professionally manufactured right here in Philadelphia, with custom fabrics made in the USA.

We proudly source high quality, eco-friendly, stretchy, soft, breathable, organic cotton and bamboo fabrics as the basis of our line, for optimum comfort and optimum play. All prints and designs are exclusive to Sweet Luka Mo, inspired by today’s youths — so messy, imaginative, and destined for great things.” – Sweet Luka Mo

  • NEW! Nugget Planters by Nikkuu Designs

Even though we are supposed to get snow later today (ugh), it actually is spring!  We just got in these awesome new handmade wood planters by local Philly artist Melissa Moore of Nikkuu Design.  Cut from a variety of woods (oak, pine, walnut), these planters are the perfect size for air plants or succulents.  If you are like me and can’t keep plants alive, these will be perfect for you!  If you kill these, you really aren’t meant to own plants! Comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.  Some are painted with splashes of bright white or aqua paint for a pop of color, while others just show off the wood grain.  Grab a couple for your window ledge to try to evoke some warmer weather! $12-$38, each comes with an air plant.

  • Meet Jewelry Artist, Ashley Gilreath

We are thrilled to welcome recent Philadelphia transplant, Ashley Gilreath to our roster of artists.  Ashley graduated from East Caroline University in North Carolina with her BFA in metal design in 2010 and then went on to exhibit her work across the country, teach and hold various artist residencies, most recently at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee.  Her multiple lines of beautifully sculpted jewelry are inspired by the “decay of memories, architecture, and heirloom objects”.  We are really excited to carry a few of her lines of jewelry in the shop!  Here is a look at each series of jewelry that we are carrying PLUS a statement by Ashley about each one. Enjoy!

    Weathered + Broken Wood Series

Pieces within this series are inspired by broken and decaying wooden fences, barns, or farming equipment. I’m interested in the process through which these functional structures are built, utilized, and abandoned over time. I enjoy how splitting and water marks on the surface of the wood provides a visual timeline for the life of these crafted objects. – Ashley Gilreath

    Water Castings

These earrings are made out of sterling and fine silver water castings. During the casting process the silver is poured into cold water and as it sinks it cools very quickly, and forms these little cups! Sometimes looking like nests, drops, or blobs, I save the best formed cups and fill them with colored glass! Enameling is a process that allows for fusing glass to metal, and it adds a wonderful reflective dimension to these earrings!

    Inscription/Book Cover Series

This body of work explores the tradition of writing notes and inscriptions upon the inside covers of books, and how a confluence of stories and people come together to create these objects. The words of the characters, the choices of the author, the artists of the covers, the writers of the secret inscriptions, and the owner of the book all effect how an individual would interpret the personal messages. Through time, as the book passes from hand-to-hand, these stories continue a dialogue whose original intimacy has faded.

    – Ashley Gilreath

    Botanical Jewelry

The designs in this series are directly influenced and inspired by the gardens of my past, specifically the hydrangeas that my mother rooted from her childhood home in Louisiana and brought with her to North Carolina. This transplanting of roots from one place to another directly reflects the paths we follow in life, and how home is given new meaning through time.

These flowers are so delicate, their blooming so quick and fleeting, yet their impression on our senses endures. I attempted to merge those characteristics into a wearable object, so that one could wear a shadow of the blossom.

Check out our full collection of Ashley’s Jewelry here and visit the shop to see it all in person! Any of her pieces would make a wonderful gift for Valentine’s Day!

  • 2014 Wall Calendars

We created two Art Star Exclusive 2014 Calendars this year with Jamie Fales of Noosed Kitty and Minnesota based artist Amy Rice.  Each calendar features a full color image that accompanies each month and the calendar was designed so you could cut and frame the images once the year is through!  Both calendars were designed in house at Art Star in collaboration with the artists and printed right here in Philadelphia at Fireball Printing!

We love Jamie Fales’ Narwhal illustrations so much that we asked her if we can do an entire calendar dedicated to this beloved animal. It includes some old favorites but also some new pieces that she made just for the calendar.  Only 50 of these were printed, so it is sure to become a collectors item.  Pick this up for $24 before it is gone!

Back by popular demand is our 2014 Amy Rice Calendar!  We made one with her back in 2012 and her fans were so sad that we didn’t have one in 2013! This calendar is filled with a selection of Amy’s art work from the past year.  We love how she combines her stencil work with antique letters and other found materials. Her use of color and pattern is absolutely stunning!  Her adorable dog, Pumpkin, makes a few appearances too!  Only 25 of these were printed.  Grab one for $34 ASAP!

We also have a few different wall calendars by Paper Sparrow.  These are single 11×17″ digital prints that feature 2014 at a glance. Choose from Two Foxes above, Animal Party or Instruments.  These are just $15 a pop and fit in a standard sized frame.

  • DIY Silkscreen Kit Debut / Make + Take with Julie Lange

The lovely Julie Lange of On3Designs has been hard at work creating a new line of DIY Silkscreen Kits, which she will be debuting at our DesignPhiladelphia Celebration / Closing party for Farmhaus + Friends on Friday, October 11th from 6-9pm.  Guests will be able to sample one of the kits on a piece of muslin to create their own one of a kind scarf to take home with them.  The make & take is completely free but we encourage visitors to purchase a kit to take home with them!

Each kit will  include a screen, 3 stencils of 1 design, small package of textile ink (which can also be used on paper), a squeegee and directions.  There will also be refill packs for purchase that will include 3 stencils of 3 designs.  These kits are great for kids 10+ up or beginners who would like to learn how to silkscreen.  By using the kit, you will learn what you will need to do to create your own one of a kind designs!

  • New Necklace with Kurt Halsey

It’s been a while since we’ve released a new product with Kurt Halsey.  Production always takes longer than expected & we had hoped to have this new super adorable deer necklace out in time for Valentine’s Day.  Alas, it didn’t happen but we hope to have them in stock soon.  Here is a quick pic of the sample.  I will post on our Facebook and Twitter page as soon as we start to sell them.  We haven’t figured out pricing yet, but it should be in line with the fireflies / birds necklaces we’ve done with him.

    Happy Sunday!

  • Hi! Meet Kelly!

I can’t say enough how much I love my job!  I get to do fun things like photo shoots with my friends!  What girl wouldn’t love that? The gorgeous Kelly Kozma agreed to model our new collection of clothing & I couldn’t be happier with the results.

Anyway, I wanted to introduce you all to this amazing lady.  She will be helping us in the shop from time to time as we start getting busy with our bazaar prep, so you’ll be seeing more of her.  I had so much fun dressing her up & taking her photo – she’s a natural model!

  • Art Star Branded Products

Salt & Pepper Shakers – The Maple Ridge for Art Star, currently in production

Over the past few years we’ve been working with a handful of our artists to make Art Star branded products. These items are a collaboration between us and some of our favorite Art Star artists. Typically we start by pitching a product idea to one of our artists & then from there we figure out how we are going to make it and price it out.   Many times we make it ourselves here in house or we find another artist or small company to make it for us. We try to keep it made within Philadelphia whenever possible and we never source outside of the US.  The artist sends us the design & we do the rest! Our products run the gamut.  We have jewelry, fridge magnets, calendars, datebooks, T-shirts and more. This past year we really pushed to put out a wholesale catalog and get some of our products into cool shops across the country.  So far we’ve been pretty successful with it and have some great ideas to expand the product line.  Here’s a glimpse of what we are currently working on & what you’ll see in our shop (and other shops, hopefully) very soon!
