It’s been a while since we’ve released a new product with Kurt Halsey. Production always takes longer than expected & we had hoped to have this new super adorable deer necklace out in time for Valentine’s Day. Alas, it didn’t happen but we hope to have them in stock soon. Here is a quick pic of the sample. I will post on our Facebook and Twitter page as soon as we start to sell them. We haven’t figured out pricing yet, but it should be in line with the fireflies / birds necklaces we’ve done with him.
I can’t say enough how much I love my job! I get to do fun things like photo shoots with my friends! What girl wouldn’t love that? The gorgeous Kelly Kozma agreed to model our new collection of clothing & I couldn’t be happier with the results.

Kelly is the woman behind KKnits, the really cool hand knit necklace/cowls that you may have seen at Art Star. We have a good selection of different colors and styles in stock now. They make a great statement piece. Find out more about KKnits here.
Kelly in an Oversized Top by Danielle Marie Tobin
She also creates beautiful mixed media pieces on paper that incorporates hand drawings with embroidery. She recently had a solo exhibition of this work at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts, which is so impressive! You can view her body of work here.

Anyway, I wanted to introduce you all to this amazing lady. She will be helping us in the shop from time to time as we start getting busy with our bazaar prep, so you’ll be seeing more of her. I had so much fun dressing her up & taking her photo – she’s a natural model!

Art Star: Tell us a bit about your work. What inspires your imagery? Andrea Courchene: As an artist and musician I am divided between two creative worlds. My process of creating art is intrinsically like refining a passage of music through practice, writing original pieces, or listening to my favorite recordings–it is quite involved. I have always found a special interest in the connections between the sound of music and visual art. Performing music inspires my art with an appreciation for the audience as well; people of all ages can find an instrument, an animal, or a scene which may capture their imagination. I’m also inspired by vintage illustrations, nature and living in New York City.
AS: Are you formally trained? If so, where did you study? AC: My formal education is in music. I have a bachelors and master’s degree in music. I’ve always loved creating art as a hobby as far back as elementary school. I’ve taken a few art classes at both my undergraduate college as well as in graduate school. I recently completed two courses at Columbia University: one in painting and the other, lithography. I’m also starting an etching class there this Spring.

AS: Are you originally from New York? What are some of your favorite places in NYC to go for inspiration? AC: I was born in England and immigrated to Florida with my family when I was in high school. Since then I’ve been lucky to travel around and have recently lived in Chicago, Portland, Oregon, and am now based in New York City. New York City is a wonderfully cosmopolitan city but I find that I am most inspired by my neighborhood on the Upper West Side of Manhattan which is always bustling and has the added advantage of two great, enormous city parks on each side: Riverside and Central Park.

AS: Are you able to focus on your work full time? Do you have a day job? Any employees? AC: Paper-Sparrow is currently my full-time work. I am fortunate to be able to supplement my income with freelance performance and teaching music. I do get a lot of support and an extra pair of hands for shipping packages from my partner, Paul, who is also a cellist.
AS: What materials do you use for the original illustrations? AC: It varies from piece to piece. I tend to gravitate towards paint: gouache, watercolors and acrylics with added textures and backgrounds. Other times I simply draw in pen and ink and digitally manipulate the images in photoshop and illustrator.
AS: Any new and exciting projects in the works? AC: This year I’m focusing on expanding my line of greeting cards and taking on more freelance opportunities.
AS: Aside from Etsy & Art Star, where else do you sell/show your work? AC: I tend to sell at a few craft fairs every year in the summers and the holiday season. I also wholesale my cards to a number of boutiques and stores across the US and to a few in Australia.
“Smoky Mountain Gypsy Jazz” by Paper Sparrow
AS: Who are some of your favorite artists/illustrators? AC: I have pretty eclectic taste but I particularly love art of the bauhaus movement and mid-century design. I love scouring vintage children’s books for illustrations by Martin and Alice Provensen, M. Sasek, Sandy Hoffman, Aliki Brandenberg and Brian Wildsmith.
AS: What music are you listening to these days? AC: We always have music playing in our apartment. You can bet on lots of classical and chamber music, jazz, Django Reinhardt and some 60s pop.

Save the Date! The 2013 Spring Art Star Craft Bazaar will be held on May 11th + 12th at The Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing. And guess what? This is our 10th Art Star Craft Bazaar! We’ve decided to revisit one of our favorite designs by Julie West for this year’s logo. This is the first image she designed for us – she just reworked it a bit this year. She also gave us a design with gold highlights, which we hope to use for the print materials.
If you are an artist and would like to participate, we are now accepting applications! Deadline is March 5th, Midnight. Spread the word to fellow artists!
I finally uploaded Carrie Bender Hill’s beautiful photos from last year’s bazaar. We were blessed with incredible weather ALL WEEKEND for like, the first time in I don’t know how long. Here are some of my favorite photos from the weekend. More HERE on our Flickr page.
ENJOY!
(P.S. if you are an artist that participated and there is a photo of your work, feel free to include your name and website in the comments section on FLICKR)
We are super excited to participate in the Clover Market’s first winter show in Philly on Sunday. We’ve been doing the market out in Ardmore for a while now & love it! The organizer, Janet Long, has a great eye and the market is such a well curated mix of vintage, antiques, and handmade.
Here are some vendors that I am personally excited to check out:
Hinterland Vintage
Hinterland Vintage always has really cute coats and dresses!
Reclaimed Crafts
Reclaimed Crafts has amazing furniture, frames, and mirrors made from reclaimed wood. Our prints would look great in their frames (hint, hint)!
Greenmarket Purveying Co
I fell in love with Greenmarket Purveying Co’s candles even before I smelled them. The packaging is fantastic & you can’t go wrong with scents like “Baked Goods”, “Cinnamon and Mint” and “Lemon and Cucumber”.
Picked Vintage has a fantastic collection of Mid Century Modern Furniture.

We have so much in store for you in 2013 – please check back often!
Running a shop, art space, and crafty business can be overwhelming with just two people. So we tend to get stuck in our little Art Star bubble sometimes. Erin & I have recently vowed to check out at least one art exhibition outside of Art Star at LEAST once a month. Tomorrow night we will be attending “Divided – An Election Party and Exhibition“, which will be held at the Ice Box within the Crane Arts Building on Tuesday (election night!) beginning at 7pm.
The exhibition/event is by artist + frequent Art Star collaborator (she made our latest line of mugs illustrated by Susie Ghahremani + we have some other special projects planned with her) and just all around awesome lady – Hope Rovelto & (I’m sure equally as awesome though we haven’t met yet) local artist Amanda Benton. The exhibition will feature art made by the pair.
Here are the details from the press release: “The main event will occur Tuesday, November 6, the evening of one of the most highly anticipated Presidential elections of our time. Beginning at 7:00pm, the artists will project live feeds of the election results from multiple news sources alongside an exhibition including politically themed broadsides, newspapers, ceramics, t-shirts, an interactive map of the United States, and more.
With the support of several local businesses including Barry’s Home Brew, who will be providing beer, and The Dapper Dog Food Truck, who will be serving up some special “Obama and Romney Dogs,” the goal of the collaborators is to capture and critique the spectacle of political discourse in our media landscape. The division of the gallery into blue and red spaces will mimic and call attention to the passionately divided supporters of Republican candidate Mitt Romney and Democratic incumbent Barack Obama.
From the artists: ‘The tension between the divided space is meant to mimic that of our two party system. We are a divided country. Our political debate reflects that and this show is meant to reflect that as well.’
An admission price of $20 gets you your choice of a handmade ceramic cup, all the beer you can drink, games, art, music, and a chance to watch history being made with artists and citizens from the Philadelphia area. A $5 discount applies to all students with ID and anyone who shows up with an “I voted” sticker. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will go to the American Red Cross to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy.”
We hope to see you there – after you vote of course!
We’ve been super busy over here at Art Star HQ. I always think of when Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh finds the sign on Christopher Robin’s door that reads “Bisy Backson” (which is supposed to read Busy Back Soon) or something like that………Then in the Tao of Pooh they explain that Rabbit is a “Bisy Backson” (always too busy) and that is so me! At least that is what I took from it…. We just released a new Art Star branded product – this annual weekly planner, in collaboration with the wonderful Julianna Swaney of Oh My Cavalier. As you can see, I’ve got a good amount on my agenda this week.
starting to fill out my weekly planner….complete with doodle collaboration with my hubby
I know that I am not great about always remembering to write in these things, so we thought we’d make one that is dateless. So if you don’t keep up, no worries – you can add the dates yourself! There are 52 weeks & some space for notes in the back. We are so happy to be working with Julianna Swaney – her illustrations make me swoon!
The holidays are right around the corner, so we’ve been looking for new artists & stocking up on all of our products. We just got in a box from Paper Sparrow filled with prints, plush, party invitations, calendars, + notecards. I really love her illustrations of animals, instruments and animals playing instruments. Very sweet! Above is a sneak peek of some of her work, which will all be added to the site soon! Look out for a full blog post on her soon too!
Ceramic Beer Cups by Hope Rovelto
We’ve also just got in these ceramic cups by local artist, Hope Rovelto. These are cast in ceramic from actual plastic party cups & feature Obama, John Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and more! She does have Mittens but I just couldn’t carry that one – sorry! These will be up soon too & I’ll also be posting a really cool exhibition/event that these will be a part of…..
We are now fully stocked with 2013 calendars & planners! Many of them are made in limited quantities, so grab one before they are gone for good!
And finally, I decided to paint these doors with chalkboard paint. It was driving me crazy the way it was. It still needs a few coats, but I plan on using it to write a blurb about Art Star & also hang the magnets. Maybe I’ll let our little customers draw on it too while their parents shop. That might get too messy though.
We had so much fun hanging out with Jordan & her boyfriend Chris! They drove up late from Cleveland early last week & stayed with my husband and I for a few days. We had a fantastic turn out at the opening & many of the pieces found new homes. We have a good amount still available though. Go here to view all the work
The show is up now through November 18th. If you are unable to stop by, check out our set of installation/opening photos on Flickr
Jordan had a fun idea to hide one of her little creatures in the neighborhood. We handed out clues to everyone that came to the opening. We decided to hide him in a wall of ivy in the back yard at Soy Cafe. Jordan made him specifically for the spot, so he was hard to find b/c his scales matched the foliage. Dominic Mambu found him towards the end of the evening. I was impressed b/c it was dark out and you could just see his little face peering out. Congrats Dominic!
Thanks to all of our friends & customers that came out for the opening! Here are some photos. Go to our Flickr page to see more.

Rheaand the lady of the hour….Jordan!
Extra special thanks to Jordan & Chris for making the long journey to Philly!! We had a blast!
We teamed up with San Diego based artist Susie Ghahremani of www.boygirlparty.com to create this awesome mug. Susie created this illustration just for us & we hope to continue working with her on new products. Local ceramic artist, Hope Rovelto of Little Chair Printing printed the illustration on these mugs for us & she did such an amazing job. I’m excited about future collaborations with these two talented ladies.
I went and got a Pumpkin Butter Soy beverage from Soy Cafe across the street to test out the mug. It was like drinking fall in a cup! My favorite thing to do during the cold weather days is to curl up with a good book & drink a hot toddy made by my husband, Cisco. That is what I will be drinking mostly from this mug.
Have you ever made a hot toddy? It is easy. Just add as much Wild Turkey American Honey Whiskey as you’d like (usually just a finger or so) to hot tea. Get an orange or lemon wedge & stick some whole cloves into it & plop that in. The honey whiskey adds just the right touch of sweetness. Enjoy!
Susie Ghahremani is a 2002 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) with a BFA in Illustration. Her artwork combines her love of nature, animals, music and patterns. Born and raised in Chicago, Susie now happily spends her time painting, drawing, crafting and tending to her pet finches and cat in San Diego, CA.
