  • An Interview with Jamie Williams of Dop Dop Designs

    First time ASCB booth mates Jamie Williams of Dop Dop Designs and Amber Zaraza of Phea Jean interview each other and find out what is in store for the upcoming bazaar! This first post features Amber’s interview with Jamie of Dop Dop Designs.  Enjoy!


    How and when did dop dop designs develop into a business?
    Where does the name dop dop come from?
    The name dop dop comes from my youngest son, Kiefer.  When Kiefer was nearly 1, he didn’t say many words, but he sure loved flip flops. Having difficulty speaking, he would always call them dop dop’s.  As time went on, he would say dop dop whenever he was happy.  So, eventually, dop dop came to mean “all things good”.   My design focus started with an emphasis on aprons due to Kiefer’s acid reflux and my need to protect my clothing during feedings. There were a ton of cute burp cloths and baby coverage, but nothing for me.  So, I started designing aprons that were durable, easy to care for and pretty without being over the top. Therefore, I felt it only right to immortalize Kiefer’s role (and sweetness) in the development of my brand,  In July 2011, dop dop designs became a legitimate business.  Three years later, here I am expanding my products and hoping to transform your kitchens.

    Describe the dop dop style.
    My style is fresh, and clean but with an element of whimsy. Specializing in kitchen accessories,  I like to merge utility and practicality with a dash of happiness and turn the things that we need into the things that we want.  dop dop designs is all about versatility, quality, easy care, and pops of color.  I put the extra care into production so that you don’t have to.


    What inspires your work?
    As for inspiration,  I am totally inspired to create a comforting haven at the dinner table where my family and yours can reconvene at the end of each day.  Life is full of fast paced activities, dinner  shouldn’t be one of them.  Even when my children are getting mac n’ cheese for dinner,  I love how they feel like it’s the most special thing ever! Simply using a cloth napkin and a place mat transforms the everyday into an occasion.   Many expected and unexpected events can become inspiration.   Inspirational things (for me):  sounds and smells of the ocean, walks in the woods, running water in the shower, blooming flowers,  80’s/90’s industrial music (oddly enough),  old photo albums, and canning.

    What items will you be bringing to the bazaar?
    dop dop designs will be bringing a slew of items to the ASCB November 8th and 9th.  As always, full and half aprons in fantastic fabrics will be available,  potholders (deluxe and mini grabbers),  reversible placemats, double-sided deluxe napkins, linen napkins,  reversible table runners, and market tote bags made of vintage tablecloths~ perfect for any excursion.   All items are made of 100% premium cotton and handmade in Chester Springs, PA.


    What dop dop item is perfect for gift giving?
    All of my items are the perfect gift for anyone who has recently moved into a new home or apartment, an avid cook, anyone who has recently remodeled their kitchen, or someone who loves to create intimate dining spaces.  dop dop designs’ potholder gift sets are the perfect hostess gift,  placemats and napkins are the perfect gift for the new homeowner, and a fantastic one of a kind market tote would please anyone with a heart!

    What other artists at the bazaar are you excited to check out?
    I am so excited to be a part of the ASCB this fall, not only as an artist/maker, but as a shopper!   I’m a big pottery fan and love giving pottery as gifts….so, I’m looking forward to Little Flower designs for those needs.  As a sewer, can’t wait to see Group Hug Quilts!!!  Big quilt fan and love their work!  For my nieces, I am sure to be hitting up Dahling accessories.  AND, of course, I am looking forward to Phea Jean.  Nobody works vintage fabric like Amber.  Can’t wait!

  • Eling of Migration Goods Shares Her ASCB Shopping List

    Hi everyone! Eling from migration goods here. As a maker I rarely get enough time to properly shop at the events I am vending at, and this is doubly so during the fall + holiday seasons. I am always kicking myself at the end of a show because I haven’t had enough time to complete my own shopping!

    This year I decided I would try to organize + plan my holiday shopping ahead of time for events that I know will have really great vendors– like, yup, the upcoming Fall Art Star Bazaar!

    Here’s what’s on my list (so far)!

    All of Dirty Ass Soap‘s soaps are so fun, but this ramen soap is definitely tops on my list for gifts this year (hope none of the potential recipients are reading this)

    Also on my list for gift shopping (and in the category of food related accessories): The everything bagel necklace from inedible jewelry

    and the amazing Old Bay Seasoning earrings from Flat Rat Studio. (Their pet portraits are totally on my own wishlist too).

    I’m obsessed with paper goods & can never find enough time to look at them all! But I’ll be making a point to find Bowerbox Press next weekend for this card & to check out all the rest of the lovely work in person.

     More paper goods please! I can’t wait to see Sarah Ryan‘s sweet cards + illustrations up close!

    For my book-loving friends (and me too), I’m very excited to pick up these bookmarks from New Academy Press, and this super-cute tote from Common Rebels too.

    Common Rebels also makes a ton of cute cat items, which I will be shopping for my cat-loving friends. Speaking of those cat friends, I’ll also be looking for this sweet cat lover scarf from Red Prarie Press.

    If my friends/family are very very good, they might find themselves the recipients of one of these gorgeous spoons or sake cups from Melissa Weiss Pottery (I’m coveting these ramen bowls for myself).

    And how cute is this stegosaurus from By Yivvie? Some tiny (or not so tiny) people I know may need a few of these plushes…

    A couple other items I will be checking out for some potentially very lucky folks include this beautiful whale skeleton necklace from J.TOPOLSKI (I am saving up for this sloth bracelet for ME!)

     and the beautiful printed work of Bonnie Kaye Studio — so good!


    Finally, I’m really excited to see these diorama & miniature pieces from metamorphosis metals up close!


    And I won’t be leaving without a print for myself from Naughty & Nice. I’m pretty sure I want Tag You Are It (below), but I’m also eyeing The Terror of the Sea…

    I really hope I get a chance to see all of these things in person next weekend, but at least I’ve made my list, right? There are SO MANY talented artists + makers vending at the Fall Art Star Bazaaron November 8th + 9th. Don’t forget to check them out ahead of time here & make your own list!

  • Jen Corace Opening + Our 10 Year Anniversary Party THIS SATURDAY!

    We will be celebrating our 10 Year Anniversary and the opening of Jen Corace’s solo exhibition, Within, with a party at Art Star this Saturday from 6-9pm + you are all invited!

    There will be beer, booze and food aplenty – including snacks donated by Soy Cafe + Honeygrow!

    Nick + Danielle of All Boy / All Girl will be playing an acoustic set throughout the evening.

    Cut and Paste Photobooth will be here with her fun props and backdrops. Cram in with all your friends and take some fun pics!

    Jen Corace will be exhibiting new, original paintings all done in gouache, ink and pencil on Rives BFK.  Corace states, “Within explores the practice of bringing the outside indoors.  I’m interested in representation of nature through home decor, the restraint, patterning and control that occurs within a space, what it means to internalize the external and the private world of quiet reflection and imagination.”  This will be Jen’s 3rd solo exhibition at Art Star.

    Jen Corace was born and raised in the not so wild wilds of suburban South Jersey.  She attended RISD from 1992-1996, graduating with a BFA in Illustration.  For the past few years Jen has been focused on children’s book illustration. She’s worked with Amy Krause Rosenthal on the Little series, with Cynthia Rylant for Hansel and Gretal and The Steadfast Tin Soldier and most recently Mac Barnett for Telephone.

    Jen currently resides in Providence, RI.  When she’s not children’s-booking-it-up she’s doing something else in her studio … like drawing for fun or working on projects with her brother.  Or she’s gardening … or wrangling a dog named Leonard … or eating too much toast … or laying on the floor and staring at the ceiling.

  • Announcing Jen Corace Exhibition + Our 10 Year Anniversary Party!

    Art Star Gallery + Boutique is turning 10 years old this Fall!  This has been such an incredible, crazy ride!  We are both living our dream and we can’t thank our customers and artists enough for making it all possible.  We have worked so hard to make Art Star a reality and though we’ve seen our share of success, we’ve also encountered our share of stumbling blocks.  But what doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger, right? We have learned alot along the way, but the #1 thing that we’ve learned is that our passion for what we do and a little bit of hustle can get us through anything. Now that we have 10 years under our belt, we feel stronger than ever and are looking forward to many more years of bringing you the very best in Art, Craft and Handmade!

  • Art Star Pop Up Market Extended!

    EXTENDED THROUGH SEPTEMBER!

    The Art Star Pop Up Market is a small, open air market featuring the work of up to 20 of the finest makers from Philadelphia and the surrounding region. (please note: due to just finding out that the pop up market is extended, we will most likely just have a handful of vendors participating each week due to time restraints) The Pop Up Market will be held on Saturdays from June 28th – September 27th along a tree lined walkway within the Spruce Street Harbor Park.  Customers can expect a variety of handmade goods all priced affordably with most items priced under $50.  Come shop our curated group of vendors between 11am-3pm every Saturday, weather permitting.  In case of poor weather, we may cancel.  Please visit this page and we will update it with any cancellations due to weather.

  • Art Star Fun Times – This First Friday!

    This First Friday from 5-8pm we are having a fun little party in the shop!  Our first Artists in Residence, Kelly Kozma will have her studio doors open for you to peek in, meet her and check out her work in progress. We will also have some free beer and snacks from our neighbor, El Capitan.

    PLUS!
    Little Chair Printing will be set up with her heat press.  You will be able to choose from her huge collection of 80’s iron on transfers (think cute kittens, unicorns, etc) and heat press your own Tee.   We encourage you to grab a few, cut them up and create a fun collage.  If you bring your own T-shirt, you can heat press it for just $5.  If not, we’ll have some on hand for you to buy for an additional $5.  Here is a photo of what our customers created the last time Little Chair set up:

Play as much as you want during the course of the evening, but each guest will get 1 game where you can rack up Art Star discounts to redeem this night ONLY!  Each large ring you get on will get you 5% off, and each smaller ring you get on will get you 10% off.  If you get all the rings on in one game, you will get 70% off – though it’s pretty hard to do that.     We just wanted to thank everyone that played a part in making the Art Star Craft Bazaar such a huge success!  Our small weekend staff, Philebrity, volunteers, the bands, our community partners and sponsors, all the vendors, DRWC – there are too many people to list!   • Kelly Kozma Solo Exhibition at Paradigm Gallery

    As many of you already know, Kelly Kozma is our first Artist in Residence.  If you’ve been at the shop, you might have seen her diligently working in her studio space in our side room that is off of our back gallery space.  For the last couple of months she has been busy finishing up her latest body of work for her solo exhibition at Paradigm Gallery.  Her exhibition, titled “Chattersphere”, will be the first at Paradigm’s brand new and much larger space at the NW corner of 4th and Fitzwater.

    Kelly’s process driven, mixed media work typically begins as a flat piece of paper or canvas and is meticulously worked with brightly colored shapes and patterns that are created with layers of drawing, painting, hand embroidery, + jewels. The end result is a rich tapestry of abstracted patterns and textures that looks more like a textile piece, rather than the flat canvas or paper that it began as.

    I learned a fun fact about Kelly’s work since she moved into our space –  the backs of each of her pieces are almost as interesting as the front, which led her to create prints of the backs of each finished piece.  These prints are then transfered onto a blank canvas, becoming the first layer of her subsequent piece. This creates a lovely continuity in her body of work.  I’ve seen each piece for Chattersphere and they are all amazing on their own.  I cannot wait to see them hanging all together.  The show is now up at Paradigm Gallery.  Please join us at the opening this Friday from 5:30 – 10. And if you can’t make it to the opening, the show is up through June 21st.

  • ASCB Shopping List: For the Home

    Whether it is an accent pillow, vase, printed textile, decor piece or whatever, the Art Star Craft Bazaar is the place to find that perfect handmade addition to your home!  Here are a few of our picks “for the home” to help you plan your shopping strategy.

    1. Boutique Textiles Lauren Rossi’s small local company, Boutique Textiles, prints the most gorgeous, colorful patterns on tea towels, napkins, pillows, fabric yardage + more! Booth #25

    2. Hannah’s Hannah Simmons is the lady behind this line of products all made from local, sustainably harvested cherry trees.  Simmons, along with her father Jonathan, create everything from hair accessories to these very useful and aesthetically pleasing IPhone Stands. Booth #100

    3. happydespina ltd Every home needs a chalkboard!  Lucky for us, Chicago based artist, Despina Papadeas cuts them into cool shapes.  Find everything from the United States, hot air balloons, instruments, to any adorable animal you could think of, and much more! Booth #274. jennyjen42 Baltimore based, Jennifer McBrien, draws birds with her sewing machine on fabric. The result is really beautiful!  She also adds elements of felt applique, which adds a splash of color that contrasts nicely with the simple black stitching. Her line includes pillows, kitchen aid / sewing machine covers, pot holders and more! Booth #63

    5. littlegreenthings Leah Boelman of littlegreenthings makes unique, reclaimed wood art pieces that she paints and also hand embroiders.  Each piece is one-of-a-kind and her selection is huge, which makes it kinda hard to choose – there are so many good ones! She stitches up outlines of states, rvs, bikes, love notes, inspirational sayings, pretty much anything you could think of.  Find the perfect piece to hang in your home! Booth #30

    6. Nikkuu I love Melissa Moore’s line of wood planters!  These are made from a variety of woods and cut into different geometric shapes.  Some are painted with a pop of bright yellow or turquoise, while the wood is left to shine on others.  These are great for air plants.  Buy a bunch to set on your windowsill or coffee table.     7. Peg and Awl Husband + Wife duo, Margaux + Walter Kent’s goods always begin as an item that they need for their own home and family.  All their products are made from old things – reclaimed wood, antique gunsling leather, vintage zippers, etc, that are given new life in the form of housewares, accessories, jewelry and journals.  This apothecary cabinet is made from reclaimed cypress and finished with milkpaint.  Made to hang in your washroom to store all your toiletries.     8. redraven studios Pittsburgh based artists, Amy Hamley, makes this gorgeous line of porcelain keepsakes. The home collection includes planters, jugs, good luck horseshoes, whiskey decanters, and more.  The pure, white porcelain shines in each piece and is sometimes accompanied by a line of gold luster or a pop of color.  Booth #78

    9. Rider Dirt Work I am in love with local Philly ceramicist, Lauren Rider’s, line of henna inspired pottery.  Each wheel thrown porcelain piece is glazed and food safe.  Use as your everyday dishes or for display. Booth #84

    10. Taylor Ceramics Art Star artist, Cara Taylor, is traveling from Easthampton, Massachusetts to sell her porcelain planters, vases, pots, and jewelry.  The surfaces of her pieces are kept to a minimal so the simple, yet beautiful details in her forms, carvings and glazing can be appreciated.  Delicate line work, hand formed ridges and beading adorn these stunning pieces.  Booth #103


    11. The 807 Faye Zimmerman of The 807 makes unique wood shelving for the home.  Display your collections in an interesting way with her triangle, gem, arrow, and zig-zag shapes.  She also makes fun, hand cut wood banners with phrases like “uhghhh” and “cheers bitches”.  Booth #48

    12. Trinity Framing Last, but certainly not least, our friends from Philadelphia’s premier custom framing shop will be selling their awesome ready made frames that they hand make from reclaimed wood.  Bring all the prints you score at the show over to them and pick out the perfect frame.  I also hear that they will be giving out coupons for custom framing with purchase.  Booth #53

  • ASCB Shopping List: Baby + Kids

    We’ve got a great group of vendors making things for the little ones in your life! Is it weird that I just want all of it in my size?  Here’s a list of vendors that will be selling goods at our upcoming Art Star Craft Bazaar for babies + kids.

    1. As the Crow Flies & Co: The West Philly husband  + wife behind this line of goods is Wilder + Mike Scott – Straight. Mike makes broken plate jewelry and wife Wilder makes vintage inspired skirts + dresses for kids.  Also, I hear that she is now making matching apparel for us grown-ups too.  Yes PLEASE!  I would totally rock this fox dress!

    2. Cutesy but not Cutesy:   Every cool kid in town owns one of Diane Koss’ super awesome monster plushies!  We love her new fuzzy monster hoodies too! If you’re lucky, you’ll see Diane prancing around the bazaar in her huggable monster head piece.

    3. Oh Hello Deer Cute screen printed tees + onesies for babies + kids, plus these awesome printed super hero tops with a cape that can velcro on + off. 

    4. Olive  + Bo Philly crafter, Lori Thomson of Olive + Bo stitches modern quilts, mobiles and plush rattles for babies and kids.  Her grey, black + white palette always includes a nice pop of  color like neon yellow or purple. These simple, yet striking, geometric designs would be a stylish addition to a kid’s playroom, bedroom, or nursery.

    5. The Opposite of Far What kid doesn’t like to play dress up?  Jessica Near of The Opposite of Far is travelling all the way from Indiana to bring Philly her popular line of felt animal masks + tails.  Her vast collection includes zoo, woodland, barnyard animals and more! You can also find a smaller selection of non-animals, including super heros and robots.  And, um, P.S., she also makes adult sizes.

    6. Sewn by Shylo Shylo Egenski makes the most precious clothing + accessories for women and children in Wilkes Barre, PA.  Her peplum + halter style dresses for little girls are particularly adorable and are made from vintage bed linens.

Sundae Matinee Rosalie Hick’s fun + quirky animal portraits are made with stitched fabric + felt and are sure to bring a smile to your face.  Napoleon Longslice, Roxie Fox, Bobby Feathers and others each come with a handwritten “Life Details” card.  Though these aren’t made specifically just for kids, I think little ones will really have a fun time coming up with stories about each of these funny characters.  The little felt pillows and framed portraits would look great in a playroom or nursery too.

Her booth is always bright, colorful and cheery and filled to the brim with the sweetest plush toys + rattles, appliqued onesies + bibs, baby quilts, purses, DIY kits and more.  Renee’s creativity is boundless and I always love to check out her latest creations.

The Wind and The Sail Laura Stantz’ line of sweet+ modern plush toys are a favorite among bazaar shoppers and we are happy to welcome her back to our line-up again this year.  Her plushies include hippos, giraffes, kangaroos, and more! Most have move-able limbs and all are superbly crafted and made from top quality materials.  Her collection of goods also includes happy vegetable baby rattles.
